  • Author: lina
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 waffles 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This easy Belgian waffle recipe offers two methods—an easy approach and a traditional technique—to create light, fluffy, and crispy waffles. Made with simple pantry ingredients like flour, baking powder, milk, and eggs, these waffles are perfect for a delightful breakfast or brunch. Serve them warm with your favorite toppings such as berries, whipped cream, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or butter.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups cold milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (or canola oil)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs (beaten)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Create a well in the center of the mixture.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients: Pour the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and beaten eggs into the well of the dry ingredients. Whisk to combine and form a smooth batter. Add a splash more milk if the batter is too thick; it should have the consistency of white school glue.
  3. Preheat Waffle Maker: Preheat your Belgian waffle maker according to manufacturer instructions. Brush the plates generously with melted butter to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook Waffles: Pour about 1/2 cup of batter into the center of the waffle maker. Close and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy, following your machine’s timing guidelines. Repeat with remaining batter.
  5. Serve: Serve waffles warm topped with fresh berries, whipped cream, powdered sugar, maple syrup, and/or butter as desired.
  6. Traditional Method – Separate Eggs: Separate eggs, placing whites in one bowl and yolks in another.
  7. Whip Egg Whites: Using a stand mixer, whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  8. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Create a well in the center.
  9. Add Wet Ingredients and Yolks: Pour in the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and egg yolks into the dry ingredients. Whisk until smooth batter forms.
  10. Fold in Egg Whites: Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter, preserving the airy texture for lighter waffles.
  11. Cook Using Waffle Maker: Preheat and butter the waffle iron, then pour approximately 1/2 cup of batter. Cook until golden and crisp. Repeat with remaining batter.
  12. Serve: Enjoy the waffles warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For crispier waffles, make sure your waffle iron is properly preheated and well greased.
  • If using melted butter, allow it to cool slightly before adding to avoid cooking the eggs.
  • Adjust thickness of batter by adding a little more milk to get the desired pouring consistency.
  • The traditional method with whipped egg whites makes waffles lighter and fluffier.
  • Leftover waffles can be refrigerated and reheated in a toaster or oven for best texture.
  • You can substitute canola oil for butter to make the recipe dairy-friendly.
