Easy Homemade Body Butter Recipe

  • Author: lina
  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: About 1 cup of body butter 1x

Description

This Easy Homemade Body Butter recipe blends luxurious shea and cocoa butters with your choice of nourishing oils, creating a whipped, creamy moisturizer that hydrates and softens skin. Ideal for daily use, this body butter is customizable with your favorite essential oils, providing a delightful scent and silky texture that melts into skin. Perfect for all skin types and simple to make with just a few natural ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Butters

  • ½ cup (3.4 oz) shea butter
  • ½ cup (2.1 oz) cocoa butter

Oils

  • ½ cup jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, or sunflower seed oil (choose one based on skin preference)

Additives

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch, arrowroot starch, or tapioca starch
  • 1030 drops essential oil of choice (optional, e.g., vanilla essential oil)

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butters and Oil: Use either a double boiler or microwave to gently melt the shea butter, cocoa butter, and chosen oil. For the double boiler, set a heatproof bowl over simmering water, stirring occasionally until fully melted. For the microwave, heat in 20-second increments, stirring carefully to avoid overheating. Once melted, place the mixture in the fridge for 45–60 minutes until partially solidified but still slightly soft in the center.
  2. Whip the Body Butter: When the oils are chilled with solid edges but melty center, add the starch and your preferred amount of essential oil (start with 10 drops). Use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or whisk to whip the mixture until it is light, fluffy, and pale in color.
  3. Store and Use: Transfer the whipped body butter to a sealable jar. Store at room temperature or refrigerate if the environment is hot (above 90°F/32°C) to prevent melting. For best results, apply immediately after showering, allow it to absorb for a few minutes, and consider using before bed while wearing cotton pajamas for soft, moisturized skin overnight.

Notes

  • Choose oils based on your skin type: jojoba for balancing, grapeseed for lightness, coconut for deep moisturizing, almond for softness, olive for nourishment, or sunflower for vitamin E benefits.
  • Essential oils are optional and can be adjusted for scent intensity.
  • Store body butter in a cool place to maintain its whipped texture.
  • This body butter can melt at approximately 90°F (32°C), so refrigeration may be needed in hot climates.
  • Use within 1 year for best quality and freshness.
