Snacks
- 1 box Wheat Chex
- 1 box Corn Chex
- 1 box Honeycomb cereal
- 1 bag Fritos (any size)
- 1 bag Bugles (any size)
- 1 bag pretzels (any size and shape)
Syrup Mixture
- 1 cup butter
- 1/2 cup Karo Syrup (or honey)
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
Topping
- 1 bottle Nori Goma Furikake
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C) to prepare for baking the snack mix evenly.
- Prepare Mix: In two large baking pans, evenly divide Wheat (or Rice) Chex, Corn Chex, Honeycomb cereal, Bugles, Fritos, and pretzels. Set these aside as you prepare the syrup coating.
- Make Syrup: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter completely. Once melted, add Karo Syrup (or honey), sugar, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. Stir continuously until the mixture is well combined and slightly warmed.
- Coat Mix: Pour the syrup evenly over the two pans of snack mix. Use two large spoons or spatulas to toss and mix thoroughly until every piece is coated with the syrup.
- Add Furikake: Sprinkle the entire bottle of Nori Goma Furikake evenly over the coated snack mix in both pans. Stir well to distribute the seasoning across all the pieces.
- Bake: Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour at 250°F. Every 15 minutes, remove the pans and toss the mix to ensure even baking and prevent burning.
- Cool and Serve: After baking, remove the pans from the oven and allow the mix to cool completely. Once cooled, divide into bags or containers for storage and sharing.
Notes
- Toasting the mix slowly at a low temperature ensures a crunchy texture without burning the syrup coating.
- Use soy sauce for a salty umami punch; substitute with tamari for gluten-free options.
- Furikake seasoning adds a unique Japanese flavor with seaweed and sesame seeds that complements the sweetness and saltiness of the mix.
- Store the cooled Chex Mix in an airtight container to maintain crispiness for up to two weeks.
- For a honey alternative, Karo syrup provides a sticky, sweet texture ideal for binding the mix.
