Description

A classic American Green Bean Casserole featuring tender green beans mixed with creamy mushroom soup, seasoned with Worcestershire sauce and spices, topped with crispy fried onions for a perfect crunchy finish. This comforting side dish is ideal for holiday dinners or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Green Bean Casserole Ingredients

  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained well
  • 10.75 ounce can cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 ounces crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a medium (1.5 to 2-quart) baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking and set it aside.
  2. Mix Soup Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, whole milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir until all ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add Green Beans and Onions: Stir the drained green beans into the soup mixture along with half of the crispy fried onions. Ensure the green beans are evenly coated with the creamy mixture.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Transfer the green bean mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly in the center.
  5. Add Topping and Finish Baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining crispy fried onions evenly over the top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until the onions turn golden brown and crispy.
  6. Rest and Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes after baking to set slightly, then serve warm as a delicious side dish.

Notes

  • For a fresher taste and texture, you can substitute canned green beans with blanched fresh green beans.
  • Whole milk provides creaminess, but you can use 2% milk for a lighter version.
  • Worcestershire sauce adds depth; for a vegetarian version, omit or replace with soy sauce.
  • If you prefer extra crispy topping, add some additional fried onions just before serving.
  • This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and baked before your meal.
