  • Author: lina
  • Total Time: 3 hours 40 minutes to 6 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 8-10 servings 1x

Description

This homemade dog food recipe combines lean ground turkey, nutritious vegetables, and brown rice slow-cooked to perfection. It offers a wholesome, balanced meal for your dog that is easy to prepare and store, made with simple whole-food ingredients to support your pet’s health.

Ingredients

Scale

Proteins

  • 3 lbs. ground turkey (85% lean, 15% fat)

Vegetables

  • 1 1/4 cups frozen sweet potatoes (from a 10oz bag)
  • 1 1/2 cups mixed frozen peas and carrots (from a 12oz bag)
  • 1 cup frozen spinach

Grains & Liquids

  • 1 1/2 cups brown rice, uncooked (can also substitute white rice)
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add the ground turkey, frozen peas and carrots, frozen sweet potatoes, frozen spinach, brown rice, and water into the slow cooker bowl.
  2. Mix Thoroughly: Break up the ground turkey with a spoon or spatula and mix well so all ingredients are evenly distributed within the slow cooker.
  3. Cook: Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6 hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking. The meat should be fully cooked and vegetables tender when done.
  4. Cool Before Serving: Once cooked, allow the food to cool completely before serving to your dog to avoid burns and improve digestibility.
  5. Store Properly: Transfer leftovers into an airtight container and refrigerate for short-term use or freeze for longer storage to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your slow cooker model.
  • You can substitute white rice for brown rice if preferred, but brown rice provides more fiber.
  • Ensure the food has cooled completely before feeding to your dog.
  • Freeze portions in meal-sized containers for convenient future meals.
  • Consult your veterinarian if introducing homemade food to your dog’s diet for the first time.
