Om Ali – Egyptian Bread Pudding Recipe

  • Author: lina
  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

Om Ali is a traditional Egyptian bread pudding made with flaky puff pastry, a rich milk and cream mixture, nuts, raisins, and coconut. Baked to a golden brown, this comforting dessert showcases layers of crispy pastry soaked in a creamy, sweet custard, topped with a medley of crunchy nuts and dried fruit for delightful texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 4 thin slices of butter

Milk Mixture

  • 5 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 5 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings

  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 1 tablespoon walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon almonds
  • 1 tablespoon pistachios
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F) to prepare for baking the pastry.
  2. Bake Puff Pastry: Place the puff pastry sheet on a baking tray and bake for 5-8 minutes on each side until it turns golden brown and crispy.
  3. Cool and Break Pastry: Let the baked pastry cool for 15 minutes, then break it into medium-sized pieces and arrange them in an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle the raisins, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, and shredded coconut evenly over the pastry pieces.
  4. Prepare Milk Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, white sugar, and vanilla extract. Heat over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  5. Assemble: Pour the hot milk mixture evenly over the pastry and nuts in the dish. Arrange the butter slices on top to add richness.
  6. Soak: Allow the pastry to soak and absorb the milk mixture for 30 to 40 minutes at room temperature before baking again.
  7. Bake Final Dish: Bake the assembled dessert in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the top is beautifully golden and set.

Notes

  • Use puff pastry for a light, flaky texture.
  • You can substitute nuts with your favorite variety or remove them for a nut-free version.
  • Allowing the pastry to soak sufficiently is crucial for a creamy interior.
  • Serve warm for the best texture and flavor experience.
  • Optional: sprinkle extra pistachios on top before serving for garnish.
