  • Author: lina
  • Total Time: 2 hours 25 minutes
  • Yield: About 24 pieces 1x

Description

This rich and buttery toffee recipe combines the perfect balance of sweet caramelized sugar and creamy chocolate, topped with crunchy nuts. Easy to make and irresistibly delicious, this homemade toffee is an indulgent treat that will satisfy all your sweet cravings.

Ingredients

Scale

Toffee Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons water

Topping

  • 1 cup semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • 0.5 cup chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, or almonds)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Dish: Line a 9×13-inch baking dish or baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat to prevent sticking and for easy removal of the toffee.
  2. Combine Ingredients for Toffee: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, combine the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, salt, and water. Stir constantly to dissolve the sugar and prevent burning.
  3. Cook to Hard Crack Stage: Continue cooking and stirring the mixture until it reaches the hard crack stage, which is about 300°F (149°C) on a candy thermometer. This ensures a firm and crunchy toffee texture.
  4. Pour and Spread Toffee: Immediately remove the saucepan from heat and carefully pour the hot toffee mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, spreading evenly.
  5. Add Chocolate Topping: While the toffee is still warm, evenly sprinkle 1 cup of chocolate chips over the surface. Let them sit for about 2 minutes to melt, then spread the melted chocolate smoothly over the toffee.
  6. Top with Nuts: Sprinkle ½ cup of chopped nuts evenly over the melted chocolate and gently press them in to adhere.
  7. Cool Completely: Allow the toffee to cool at room temperature for about 2 hours until fully set and firm.

Notes

  • Use a candy thermometer to accurately reach the hard crack stage for perfect toffee consistency.
  • Choose the type of chocolate chips based on your preference: semi-sweet for a richer taste or milk chocolate for a creamier finish.
  • For nut-free version, simply omit the chopped nuts or replace with seeds.
  • Store toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
  • Be very careful handling hot sugar mixtures as they can cause severe burns.
